Alcotraz Manchester Review – BYOB Prison Cocktail Bar

AD: Gifted I was invited to review Alcotraz Manchester with two complimentary tickets. All views, photos and questionable accents are my own. You can read more about the brand on the official Alcotraz website.

We booked an afternoon session from 2:15pm to 4pm and I have never experienced anything quite like it. It was absolutely fantastic!

Think immersive theatre meets cocktail bar in Manchester, with cheeky smuggling, quick thinking and four cocktails built around the spirit you bring.

What is Alcotraz Manchester?

Alcotraz is a prison-themed, actor-led cocktail experience in the city centre. You check in, get your orange jumpsuit and your cell number, then head upstairs to begin the experience.

The story unfolds around you from the moment you enter, while the bar team visit each cell to find out what you like and what you want to avoid drinks wise.

Bring a sealed, unopened bottle of spirits and they turn it into around four personalised cocktails across a 1 hour 45 minute slot. Mixers and ingredients are included in your ticket price.

The Cocktails – The Important Bit

This is not style over substance. The drinks are properly made and tailored to taste. The mixologist asks a few quick questions and will then build each cocktail round around your bottle. You can steer it sweet, citrusy, fruity or spirit-forward.

If you prefer something lighter, they will oblige. If you like a kick, say so or give them free reign with their creativity.

Across the session the four serves feel distinct rather than repetitive, so you get variety as well as theatre. Presentation is on point, the pacing is steady and you never feel rushed.

Mocktails are available and do not feel like an afterthought. I smuggled a small bottle of white rum into Alcotraz and had a lovely mix of fresh, balanced drinks that suited it perfectly, from mojitos, daquiris and more.

We were also given a small bonus shot by inmate Cassidy (was was in solitary at this point) after completing a little mission. That extra pour was unexpected but felt like a little treat for a job well done.

As we know, alcohol isn’t allowed in prisons, so at Alcotraz it’s nicknamed “chicken soup”, which adds a cheeky edge to the whole experience.

Inside Cell Block Three-Four at Alcotraz Manchester

Intake is quick. You are shown to your cell and the cast keep the energy high without putting anyone on the spot.

There are five cells in Block Three-Four, so it’s easy to chat with your neighbours and compare cocktails, plus there are loads of photo opportunities thanks to the props, barred doors and mugshot moments. The set design leans into a dark, damp prison feel, which really does add to the atmosphere and excitement.

You’ll meet three Alcotraz standouts. The Warden is gloriously flamboyant, all showmanship and razor-sharp timing. Think Boyd Crowder from Justified dialled up a notch. He sweeps in (literally – he made me jump and I spilled some drink!), sets the tone and keeps everyone on their toes.

The Warden

Prison Officer Wilmot who greets you on arrival, plays it deadpan, barking orders one minute, slipping in a wink and giggle the next and somehow gets the whole block laughing.

Then there’s Cassidy, the resident inmate and loveable fixer who quietly recruits you for little bits of mischief and makes you feel part of the inside team.

They will take the mick out of you, gently and they never punch down. If you want to dive in, they will give you plenty to do. If you would rather sit back, they clock that instantly and move on, so you still feel immersed without any pressure.

Is it good for groups and occasions?

Yes. It is ideal for date nights, birthdays, hen or stag groups and mates who want something more memorable than a standard bar crawl. You can sit back and sip or get involved. Saying yes to the small tasks adds to the fun.
