PAC-MAN LIVE Experience Manchester Review

AD Review – If you’re looking for something completely different to do in Manchester, whether you’re a retro gaming fan, planning a family day out or just fancy a high-energy challenge with friends – the brand-new PAC‑MAN LIVE Experience is one to add to your list.

I recently had the chance to try it out with Helen from North West Family Adventures and her family, and we didn’t stop laughing (and sweating!) from start to finish.

Located at Arcade Arena on Lower Byrom Street, just around the corner from the Science and Industry Museum, this immersive experience drops you into a full-scale PAC‑MAN maze, complete with glowing lights, fast-paced gameplay, and those ever-pesky ghosts.

If you’re building a full day out, our museums and galleries in Manchester guide is packed with nearby ideas, including places you can hit up before or after Arcade Arena.

Whether you’re six or sixty, it’s a seriously fun, active and totally unique way to spend an hour in the city.

A Classic Game Reimagined That Everyone Will Love

If you grew up playing PAC‑MAN in the arcade or on a console, this is going to hit hard on the nostalgia. But don’t be fooled, this isn’t just a nod to the past!

This is a full-on, physical experience, where you totally become the character, racing around a huge, glowing maze while trying to dodge those pesky ‘ghosts’, collect pellets and rack up points (bonus points for collecting fruit!).

If you’re looking for another exciting, high-energy experiences at the Arcade Arena, check out our Chaos Karts Manchester review for a real-life Mario Kart adventure!

These are the pesky little critters you have to run from at the PAC‑MAN LIVE Experience… and trust us, they’re faster than they look!

It blends the retro vibe of the original game with the scale and energy of something far more modern. And while it’s aimed at families and kids, adults who loved the game the first time round will get just as much (if not more) out of it. Just watch their competitive streak shine through!

The Setup – Big, Bright and Fast-Paced

The experience takes place in one large arena, with the space split into neon-lit maze sections. There’s a raised platform in the centre where the MC stands (with any spectators not playing and players who need a rest – it’s a good place to keep your drink too!), shouting instructions, hyping everyone up and generally keeping things moving.

Before entering the arena, you’ll be asked to sign a health waiver confirming you’re fit to take part and that’s for good reason. Once it starts, there is very little downtime.

It’s sprint, dodge, weave, crash into another player and repeat. You’ll be red-faced, out of breath, super sweaty (I’d wear a white t-shirt!) and wondering if you’ve accidentally signed up for a fitness class disguised as a game.

The whole experience lasts about 50–60 minutes, with roughly 30 minutes of actual gameplay across multiple rounds, including bonus levels (one of which I won!).

Playing PAC-MAN LIVE – Short Rounds with LOTS of Big Energy

Players run through a glowing PAC‑MAN maze at the PAC‑MAN LIVE Experience Manchester.

Once the rounds start, the chaos begins. Players dash around collecting glowing pellets and dodging increasingly aggressive ghosts, all while trying to score as many points as possible. Rounds are short but intense – just enough time to get stuck in before rotating to the next.

There are fun extras too, like vibrating haptic vests that penalise you for trying to cut over the walls (not actual walls!) or getting tagged by a ghost and randomised power-up items you’ll want to grab if you can outrun the competition.

In one round, I quickly put a spurt on, aiming for a fruit for extra points when it disappeared right in front of my eyes as the round ended. I was gutted!

You don’t notice them while running around, however there are large screens all around the arena, with digital crowds and huge visual effects that give the whole thing a game-show-meets-gladiator-arena style energy.

The PAC-MAN Hosts – Full of Energy and Encouragement

The experience starts with a highly energetic welcome from a gameshow-style host, dressed in a bright yellow suit. Players are asked to introduce themselves, which might feel a little awkward if you’re the more reserved type.

But credit where it’s due, the MC brought a lot of enthusiasm and make a real effort to keep the group engaged throughout the introduction and game play.

When you’re running around, it’s easy to forget your surroundings but you would be spurred on when hearing the MC congratulating you for a move.

Players are randomly called to sit out a round, though you can choose to sit out a round to catch your breath – and honestly, most people seemed relieved to take a breather by round three!

Getting There and Accessibility

PAC‑MAN LIVE is located inside Arcade Arena on Lower Byrom Street, Manchester (M3 4FP) – just a short walk from Deansgate or Castlefield and not far from the Science and Industry Museum.

I jumped off at the St. Peter’s Square Metrolink stop and walked down John Dalton Street to Deansgate, popped down Quay Street and ambled through Saint John’s Gardens and the Arcade Arena was right there in front of me. It was around an 8-9 minute walk.

There is limited street parking nearby, and the closest car parks are the NCP Manchester Spinningfields (M3 3BE) or NCP Manchester Great Northern (M3 4EJ).

The venue is wheelchair accessible and guests with additional needs are encouraged to contact the team before booking to make arrangements.

Is The PAC-MAN LIVE Experience Worth It?

This isn’t just a fun day out, it’s a workout disguised as an arcade game. But that’s what makes it so memorable. Whether you’re eight or eighty, there’s something brilliant about stepping into a classic video game world and living it out for real.

Would I do it again? Yes I would… and now with knowledge of the game, I would totally win! The PAC‑MAN LIVE Experience is a wild, sweaty, brilliantly over-the-top mashup of nostalgia and next-level immersion and I totally recommend it!

My top tip is to wear a white t-shirt as you will be DRIPPING in sweat! You have been warned!

Just don’t forget: your trainers, oddles of energy and remember, when the ghosts turn blue… chase them and step on them!
